Chapter Eleven

Dahlia woke and climbed out of bed, shutting her mind down to everything but what lay ahead. She stretched the kinks out of her sore body before she took a few steps and peered out of the smoother-pane.

The huge, fiery sun glowed outside and lit up the palace courtyard and its outer grounds, signaling dawn. Already many of her people were getting on with their day and going about their business. Merchants, bakers, launderers and cleaners.

The soldiers would also begin their training soon, pushing their bodies to the limits in preparation for their next battle against the Tantonics. But today even the soldiers’ thoughts would be preoccupied.

The moment the twin moons pulled free from the horizon, the elder Riddichians’ dragons would be set free.

Most of her people dreaded the once-monthly event. But surely the pain was fleeting once the exhilaration of flight and the power of the dragon took over?

Not that she’d know.

She’d once again stare longingly out this very same smoother-pane as the winged shadows of her comrades passed overhead in the moonlight, glorying in their freedom of the sky.

One day that will be me too.

Yet even as the thought went through her mind, she knew it was becoming less and less likely. Her brothers had been much younger than she when they’d become dragon, and yet here she was, an unchangeling still waiting for the day her beast roared into existence.

“Princess, come back to bed.”

She turned at the murmured, sleepy voice, her heart wrenching at the sight of the gorgeous male lying in her bed. His beard had scraped her in places that were even now chafed and throbbing, her inner muscles still bruised and sore from his overly large cock.

As a virgin she should probably have chosen someone with a less sizeable appendage. Except few others had the skill her dragon should have appreciated. Because when it came to sex, Wyatt most certainly had talent.

Apparently talent wasn’t enough.

Soon he’d be dragon, while her dragon again stayed locked away inside her.

She shook her head. “Sorry Wyatt, having sex with you was ... enlightening. But we both know there won’t be another joining.”

His whole body stiffened, his relaxed manner fading fast. But understanding flashed in his eyes too. She wanted to find her mate—any male who’d bring forth her dragon—and he clearly wasn’t it.

“Of course,” he said smoothly, even as he stood and dressed back into his tunic. He bowed his head, then said huskily, “I truly hope you find the male worthy of you and your dragon.”

She didn’t say anything, just watched as the gorgeous male left her palace rooms. She had no doubt he’d enter another woman’s rooms soon enough, and pleasure her just as thoroughly.

A pity pleasure was only a fleeting emotion.

A freed dragon would have been forever.

She sighed. She’d worked her ass off to become a warrior her people loved and respected. That she didn’t have a dragon to fall back on when she needed one most was a huge disadvantage, not just to herself, but to her entire team.
